• We are going to draw a couple of ponds down in Kurihara, Miyagi, Japan

Unauthorized, non-consented, secret stocking of the blackbass into the Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma gave rise to population burst of the highly competitive and predatory fish around 1996. Number of indigenous fish then declined less than 1/100 in autumn, 2000. An endangered bitterling Acheilognathus typus had been extinct until that time. At the same time, several farm ponds in the lake catchment were also suffered by bass stocking. This systematic outlaw bass stocking had devastative effects on biodiversity in the entire Izunuma-Uchinuma basin.
The bass eradication project expecting Acheilognathus typus restoration began in the lake since 2004 by volunteer people (bass-busters). In accord with bass decline in the lake, small cyprinid and gobiid fish increased. Recently further, a small number of Acheilognathus typus appeared in the lake.
To eradicate basses from the entire basin to stop inflow of the basses to the lake, draining farm ponds up has also been done. This September, we are planning to draw a couple of ponds down in Kurihara, Miyagi, Japan to catch all the basses in the ponds. Bass eradication in the ponds may bring about restoration of indigenous fauna.

Draw-down of the Mukaida pond (November 27, 2019)

Anyone can freely join to this activity. Big number of the basses, crucian carps, etc can be caught easily. You can enjoy this orgy catch. If interested, contact to address below. It depends on the weather around the day when we do it. For complete draining, we hedge rainy days. We will call back when the day is fixed.
The Namazuno-Gakko, intensively conducting pond draw-down and biodiversity survey over there, is the implementing body of this activity. We ALCS corporate this activity.
